History of Cary

During it's initial days, Cary was known as Bradford's Ordinary. About 100 years after its inception, the construction of the North Carolina Railroad was routed through Cary. This railroad was established to provide access between New Bern and Hillsborough via Bradford's Ordinary making it accessible by a major transportation route. Allison Francis "Frank" Page is revered as the founding father of the town. He was famed as a lumberman as well as farmer of Wake County. In 1854, he, together with his wife Catherine "Kate" Raboteau Page, bought the land near the railroad junction and named the land 'Cary'. The name drew inspiration from a renowned prohibitionist and a former Ohio congressman, Samuel Fenton Cary. The first sawmill, post office, streets and a general store were laid by Page himself. On April 6, 1871, Cary was incorporated and Page was elected as its first mayor. Kildaire Farms in Cary became the first Planned Unit Development based in North Carolina. It was developed by Thomas F. Adams, Jr. The school system in Cary initiated in 1907. In 1950, the first supermarket, Piggly Wiggly was established in Cary.
